our why
Courts and the law can be intimidating, even for lawyers, so imagine how the average person without a legal education might feel? It is often said that “America is a nation of laws.” For so many people, their lack of knowledge or adequate representation means that they can be taken advantage of. Tah Law seeks to empower families, especially through estate planning, to pass down wealth to the next generation, express their healthcare and end of life wishes clearly, and alleviate the burdens on their loved ones in the future.
Estate Planning for the Culture
Studies indicate that about 70% of Black people in America do not have a will or any other sort of estate planning document. When someone dies intestate (without a will), this opens their assets to court proceedings that can eat up a big chunk of what they’ve left (attorney’s fees, probate costs, taxes, and more). Communities of color lose money, property, and other valuables every year because not enough people are planning for this inevitability.
Estate planning is a critical process that enables individuals to protect their assets and ensure that their wishes are carried out after their death. For many people of color, estate planning has historically been a complex issue, often complicated by societal factors and systemic oppression that have prevented the accumulation of wealth and preservation of assets for future generations. As a result, estate planning has taken on added importance in these communities, as families seek to safeguard their hard-earned wealth, ensure the long-term financial stability of their families, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
For so many people, legal advice and representation seems so far out of reach. People are scared to start the process to memorialize their wishes or protect their assets because they do not have information or the process seems overwhelming. Tah Law meets our clients where they are (literally and figuratively), providing an accessible, affordable, and culturally competent process.
We are working to raise awareness about the importance of estate planning, demystify the process, and make it more accessible to people from all walks of life. We are happy to partner with various organizations throughout the community to provide estate planning information sessions (at no cost to community members) to reach people who might not otherwise know how to start the process of protecting their interests.
It is well past time to do away with the myth that estate planning is only for society’s ultra wealthy. Many people of modest means can benefit from a comprehensive estate plan.
